Technology for Remote Teaching: Asynchronous Online Options

This guide offers options for synchronous (live) and asynchronous (recorded or self-paced) teaching as well as third party content that can be used as a substitute/addition to online teaching in the event of a law school closure or class cancellation.

Lecture Capture in Empty Classroom

If on-campus, faculty may take advantage of the lecture capture technology available and record their lecture to an empty classroom for future playback. Lecture capture technology is available in the following rooms:

  • 101, 102, 103
  • 201, 202, 203, 207
  • 301A, 301B, 301C, 302, 303, 306, 307

If the recording is not taking place as part of a regularly scheduled class, faculty should complete a Request for Media Recording form

My Mediasite Desktop Recorder

Recording audio to accompany a PowerPoint or screen sharing presentation is the simplest way to create a recorded lecture. Villanova provides faculty and staff with Mediasite accounts which allows you to record your screen (whether using PowerPoint slides or navigating through websites). Mediasite is the same program that records and stores lectures that are recorded in the classroom but it also allows you to make recordings from your computer via a desktop recorder app that you can download to your computer for use in recording lectures on your own. Use the links below to download the player to your computer, get started recording your lectures and trouble-shoot any issues that may arise using the user guides.

Should students inquire about what is needed to view a Medisite recording on their computer, this link details the system requirements for viewing on both a PC and a Mac.

If you'd like to add closed captions to your video, you'll need to record your presentation in Zoom first. Please see the directions below for capturing the closed captions and adding them to your video file in Mediasite.

Additional Recording Options

Both Zoom and Blackboard Collaborate Ultra allow you to record sessions. You can create videos using either tool from your laptop, no participants required! Information on recording Zoom and Blackboard Collaborate sessions can be found on the Live Online Teaching tab.
