Author Chat: November 13, 2023

Professor Emma Kearney presented her paper A Romantic History of Newgate Prison: Theories of Punishment in Historical Romance, 1977 to Present to the law school community on November 13. She wrote the paper for the International Association of Popular Romance Conference in Birmingham, United Kingdom where she spoke this past July. Her paper examines the ways incarceration and carceral spaces are depicted in popular genre fiction romance; tracing how justifications for punishment changed in the 18th and 19th centuries when the books take place, and in the latter half of the 20th century into the 21st century when the books were published.
